Leadership

So often we see people move up through the ranks of the organisation. It’s great seeing good people being promoted however often the development needed to step into the new role is not a focus. There are great leadership development programs being developed in a number of organisations and yet the statistics being shown globally are that leadership skills are still lacking. People are developing great workers and poor leaders.

When developing your own skills, or those of the people you work with, it’s important to focus on four key competency areas. These skills are essential when assuming a leadership role, whether that be formally appointed role or not.

Self Awareness

Knowing yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses? How do others perceive you? Are you somebody with integrity? This competency is essential.

Building Relationships

Do you work well with others? Superiors, your peers and your direct reports. Do you build rapport well? Are you able to read situations well when you interact with others?

Business Acumen

Decision making, technical skills, industry knowledge and being able to effectively do your job.

Organisational Strategy

Do you understand your organisation’s long term goals and what is required in your role to move the organisation forward in pursuit of these goals? Great leadership requires that you are able to identify key influential people that you will need to collaboratively work with in order to achieve your goals.

Let’s keep it simple…remember:

  • Think strategically
  • Create a shared purpose
  • Motivate and communicate effectively
  • Sponsor and lead change when it occurs
  • Inspire confidence in others (especially during times of stress)
  • Establish priorities and focus
  • Continue to develop yourself
